Dept on Aging seeks nominations for Senior Hall of Fame

Nomination deadline is August 22; Winners announced later this year

SPRINGFIELD - July 28, 2014. Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA) Director John K. Holton, Ph.D., today reminded Illinoisan residents about the upcoming deadline to nominate older adults for the 2014 Senior Illinois Hall of Fame awards. The annual award, established in 1994 by the General Assembly, recognizes residents of the state, ages 65 and older who excel in the categories of Community Service, Education, Performance and/or Graphic Arts and the Labor Force. Nomination forms must be postmarked or faxed by Friday, August 22, in order to be considered.

“Since its start, 91 people have been inducted into the Senior Illinois Hall of Fame. Eligibility is based on the nominee’s present or past accomplishments. We look forward to recognizing the winners for their personal achievement and urge people to nominate someone they know,” said Director Holton.

Nomination forms are available at local Area Agencies on Aging, on the department website or by calling the Department’s Senior HelpLine at 800-252-8966. Nominations forms may be mailed to IDoA Division of Communications & Outreach at One Natural Resources Way #100, Springfield, Illinois 62702-1271 or faxed to: 1-217-785-4477.

Eligibility is based on the nominee’s past or current accomplishments in the category of choice, which excel in one of four categories: Community Service, Education, Performance and/or Graphic Arts and in connection to their employment, called the Labor Force. The candidate must be age 65 or older and a current Illinois resident or a former resident who lived in the state most of his or her life. Posthumous nominees are also considered.

IDoA will compile a list of nominees then consult with the members of the Illinois Council on Aging to determine the award winner from each category.

This year’s winners will be inducted into the Senior Illinois Hall of Fame during a ceremony in October.
