State Fire Marshal announces grant money for small equipment to bolster emergency response capabilities
$2 million will help fire departments purchase small equipment, protective clothing, tools and more
SPRINGFIELD – Illinois State Fire Marshal Larry Matkaitis today announced that $2 million in grants are now available to help fire departments across the state purchase small equipment and protective clothing that will enable them to better serve their communities. Applications must be postmarked no later than February 20, 2010.

Governor Quinn, Senator Durbin Announce Caterpillar Joining FutureGen Alliance
Machine Giant, CAT, Joins World’s Leading Energy Companies in Support of FutureGen Clean-Coal Project
CHICAGO – February 8, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin today announced that Caterpillar, a global leader in the manufacturing of heavy machinery, will join the FutureGen Alliance. This is the second major new Alliance member signed up in just over a week. Caterpillar's move signals critical support ahead of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (USDOE) pending decision to move ahead on FutureGen construction.

Proposals Sought for Innovative Care Program
Integrated Care Delivery System brings providers together, improves care for patients
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) has taken the first step in significantly reforming the delivery of care to the most vulnerable populations covered by the Medicaid Program. HFS has issued a request for proposals (RFP) seeking two managed care organizations (MCOs) to provide adults with disabilities and older adults in the Medicaid program the full spectrum of Medicaid covered services through an integrated care delivery system. The first phase of the program will focus on traditional medical services with later phases coordinating long term care. The pilot program will affect approximately 40,000 individuals in suburban Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kankakee, Lake, and Will Counties.

They are also reminding fans to buckle up before traveling to and from their desired locations.

State Public Health Director Announces $3.1 Million to Reduce Obesity and Smoking in Illinois
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding to improve public health
SPRINGFIELD – Dr. Damon T. Arnold, director, Illinois Department of Public Health, today announced Illinois is receiving approximately $3.1 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help reduce obesity, increase physical activity, improve nutrition and decrease smoking in Illinois. The award is part of $119.5 million going to states as the first of several initiatives that make up the Communities Putting Prevention to Work, a comprehensive prevention and wellness initiative funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Illinois Department on Aging Focuses on Oral History to Document Stories and Learn Lessons
SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA) director Charles Johnson announced today that oral history is this month’s theme for the year-long campaign 2010: Year of the Engaged Older. Director Johnson is leading a statewide initiative to improve the health and lives of older adults and increase their involvement in volunteering, education and working. Out of the initiative came a year-long campaign for the year 2010 to engage citizens, especially those ages 50 and older, and tap their talents to benefit their communities and the entire state. Illinois Transportation Secretary Announces Real World Design Challenge Winner
Innovative Program Will Educate Engineers of Tomorrow
SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Transportation Secretary Gary Hannig announced today announced that a State winner has been chosen for the Real World Design Challenge. The Real World Design Challenge is a national education initiative that puts high school students alongside industry experts to gain engineering experience by developing a solution to a proposed challenge. This year’s challenge involved designing the tail section of an aircraft to maximize fuel efficiency.
